Billy Talent just picked up one of the biggest honors in Canadian music, recognition for three decades of actually showing up for people instead of just talking about it. F.U.MS, the band’s work supporting the MS community, is the clearest example of what that looks like when it’s sustained over twenty years.
At the 2026 Juno Awards, held in Hamilton, Ontario, the band took home the Humanitarian Award, presented by Sum 41’s Dave Baksh and Jason “Cone” McCaslin. The Junos don’t hand this one out for a hit album or a sold out tour. It goes to an artist or industry leader whose humanitarian work has made a real, lasting impact. Billy Talent earned it the hard way, over three decades of doing the work instead of just talking about it.
It started with a can of food
Before Billy Talent was Billy Talent, they were a high school band called Pezz, playing their first show in a Mississauga gymnasium back in 1993. Admission wasn’t cash. It was a canned good for the local food bank. That instinct stuck. Decades later, on their 2022 Canadian tour, the band partnered with food banks in every city and raised more than $48,000 through ticket surcharges alone.
Over the years, Ben Kowalewicz, Ian D’Sa, Jon Gallant, and Aaron Solowoniuk built real partnerships with organizations like Kids Help Phone, Make Music Matter, and War Child, using their platform and their touring schedule to move actual money toward people who needed it.
The part that hits closest to home

Aaron was diagnosed with MS in his twenties. As symptoms progressed, touring got harder, until it eventually became impossible. Instead of moving on without him, the band found a way to keep going together. That’s the short version. In 2006, Aaron partnered with MS Canada to put on a single fundraising concert with a modest goal of $25,000. That one night turned into F.U.MS, an initiative that has now raised more than $700,000 over nearly two decades and expanded all the way to Germany, where Billy Talent’s fanbase showed up just as hard for the cause as they do for the music.
That money has funded post-secondary scholarships, youth programs, and summer camps, the kind of support that actually changes what living with MS looks like for a younger person facing a tough diagnosis.
An award that actually means something
Plenty of awards get handed out for output, an album, a tour, a single. This one is different. It’s recognition for showing up consistently, for decades, without needing a reason beyond the fact that people needed help.
Billy Talent didn’t win this for being a great rock band, though they are one. They won it because three decades in, they’re still a band that puts its platform to work, food bank shows in high school gyms, partnerships with War Child and Kids Help Phone, and F.U.MS, the cause that grew biggest because Aaron was living it firsthand.
